Discovery of the Design Community

Instructional Design and Technology is a field which, I have found, is one that is not only novel and developing, but also an interdisciplinary study which requires knowledge of other subjects such as Education and Psychology. Within my first week of study, I have been introduced to various learning theories that have been considered in IDT to help advance the instructor’s knowledge of the processes involved in the acquisition of new information. In continuing my studies, I have noted the importance as a new student in this subject, to engage with the online community in hopes of gaining further insight into this fascinating field. Although I was able to find a wealth of information online on the topic of Instructional Design, there were three sites specifically which I found of particular interest in helping me gain a foundational knowledge of concepts and tools to be aware of when beginning study in this area.

LeapsforLearning – When reviewing various posts on this site, I found that it would be a great place for me to start in order to learn about basic ideas, principles, and theories to be assessed, specifically pertaining to young children. The different topics examined on this site specifically include Bloom’s Taxonomy, and how to utilize the techniques of this learning strategy within a classroom setting. Although this site is focused on an audience of educators for early childhood learners, I believe that I could use these strategies for further examination and explore how these tools can be implemented for adult learners.

The Integrator – This site is very engaging and informative. I includes a visual model of a diagram displaying the ADDIE design model, and what this process looks like. I am excited to delve further into the topic of the ADDIE design and this page is a great place for me to begin in order to gain insightful knowledge on how this design can be used effectively by instructors within each step. The focus of this page is to use tools to educate and motivate teachers, instructors, and professors within their field through the use of technology in order to advance the learning experience for their students.

Streetcar8 – When reviewing the details on this site, I was intrigued to learn more about this organization, not only because of the creativity and innovation of its business design, but also because of the great amount of content that has been added to this site just within the last few months. I am interested in learning more about this company, as well as taking the time to research the various posts in an attempt to gain further knowledge about how instructional design can be used in a workplace setting. Several topics of interest are discussed here, including, the benefits of e-learning, gamification, and insights into training methods, just to name a few.

  1. Thank you for providing the links above. I was especiall interested in the Leaps4Learning site. I am a kindergarten teacher and have been using the bloom's chart for years. I really appreciated how the adapted the chart wording from knowledge to remembering and evaluation to creating. The words have a stronger inference in the kindergarten classroom (and beyond). I'm going to adapt my charts to include that wording and also adapt my plans to include the wording. After all, it's exactly what we are looking for in the big picture. We need our students to remember in the very beginning of the learning process and by the end of the learning process, we want them creating with thier new knowledge.
